Working for money or volunteraly, does it make any difference?

Well, it depends, if you want to stuff your pocket,
but generally not.

During my years of involvement in non profit management I have learned a lot. I have learned how to appreciate committed and motivated people’s work, and saw how the outside world just simple does not understand their enthusiasm, and dedication towards something that they don’t get paid for. (I have to state that especially this looks are coming from countries like mine (Hungary) where the voluntarily involvement in work is not really valued/understood.)

I have also learned, and saw one very interesting point: it does not matter if you pay someone or not for a task, if he or she is motivated enough (by external or internal factors) understands the meaning and the “total picture” of a position; he/she is doing equally well. If the person sees its part in development of a common great, if the person is thanked and supported by likewise team members, it does not matter if you pay them a dime or not.

All is true if we have a basis, if the person has achieved its financial goals, has the financial background so he / she can afford all this.

If I go a bit deeper, certainly this entire issue can be only valued if we take the same person who is doing 2 different tasks. One of the tasks is for example a sales activity; he has to sell soap to large distributors. You hate the product, hate the colleagues, its very clear that the management does not give a damn about your opinion, but you have 6 figure monthly salary. The other task is your involvement in a volunteer organization where you are the marketing officer of the NGO running projects in the field of community development. (Obviously you just got thanked every day by the local people because of your work, but not a single penny). Most probably (since lets say the guy is not a moron) he is doing equally well in both positions, but most likely he is going to leave the paid job sometimes at the first possible opportunity (and then the workplace is in trouble to find equally ok guy

What a business leader can learn from all this? Try to combine in businesses these two factors. Make good salary and create a working environment, where you count on your people (and you let them know) , ask for their opinion, and even if not all ideas are great you put some of them in action. You thank your people, you listen to them, and also create a FUN working environment. Brian Tracy said that workplace is for work not for fun. BULLSHIT! How the hell you expect your people to work with happiness with joy, if you don’t give them opportunities for it?
